Event description

Description

Could you survive the the complete loss of all your memories or a drastic change in your personality and values? Or would you thereby cease to really be you? What if your psychology were transferred into another body? Would the resulting person be you, or just someone psychologically just like you? These are questions about personal identity, about what makes an earlier person and a later person one and the same. Personal identity matters greatly for how we ought to make decisions, and in particular for how we ought to plan for the future. We will look at some widely-defended theories of personal identity - that we are souls, that we are our bodies, and that we are our psychologies - and explore their implications for how we ought to live our lives.

Dr Brian Hedden is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Sydney, where his main research interests are rationality, philosophy of science, and political philosophy. He is the author of Reasons without Persons: Rationality, Identity, and Time (Oxford University Press, 2015). Before coming to Sydney, he received his BA from Princeton University and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was a Junior Research Fellow at Oxford University. Outside of philosophy, he is a keen runner and scuba diver.
