Cool Change operates on the unceded sovereign lands of the Whadjuk Noongar Bibbulmun people. We recognise thousands of years of culture and custodianship in this region, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and future. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
Not Inherent In Intersecting Is To Cut, To Join Is Also, is a section from In The Incidental Could It Be Known? a multidisciplinary performance presented by South Australian artist Pony, when they were in residence at Cool Change in January 2019.
Not Inherent In Intersecting Is To Cut, To Join Is Also will be re-presented by invited local performance artists Alexander Turner, Sage Pbbbt and Kelsey Diamond, and resulting materials will be installed in the hands should have no peace for the remainder of the exhibition, at Cool Change Contemporary.
This event is will take place over Instagram livestream with auto-generated captions.
About the work
In this iteration, the work continues to explore: parts of existence that we don’t decide, which are incidental, mundane, or painful, leaving traces on our bodies and minds and how expression can transform these aspects into connection access being denied to bodies seen as unreliable through a dominant lens, how the focus is on them to “overcome” multiple barriers in a system not designed for variables; where communities can be located in between the range of solitude and intimacy, learning and knowing, coping with waiting, uncertainty, and taking risks?
I started placing glass and ceramic objects that I had accidentally broken in my home on a shelf in my living area. I was attached to the history I had with these objects, times of solitude and writing while sipping tea, meals I made for myself served on dishes. I was exploring through my poetry the idea of the body-mind and parts of existence that we don’t decide, traumas which leave traces on our bodies and minds and spaces. I was exploring whether to throw away certain possessions because of their presence during traumatic events, could I throw away my mattress, clothes, things that I couldn't afford to replace. I questioned the line between my body, memories and objects I rely on.
A Perth Festival event supported by Visual Arts Program Partner Wesfarmers Arts.
About Pony
Pony is an interdisciplinary artist that experiments, creates and collaborates through and between composition, performance, making and installation, and poetry and creative writing
Their practice has been developed through formal and informal studies, through professional development as an artist in the community through residencies, workshops, performances and exhibitions, contributing locally and interstate in a variety of settings. Their disabled, trans and queer identities inform how they centre their practice on accessibilty, mutual aid and collective care, and subverting the dominant gaze.
Intersecting space with readily available and mundane physical material, but with community support is part of their method to gain access to meaningful expression and facilitate meaningful expression. They compose/construct/write/perform to facilitate collaboration and improvisation, analyzing likely variables, materials and space.
Pony resides and creates on unceded Kaurna Land.
