About this Event

Laura Hill Biography

“a guitar slinging chanteuse with a voice that could lay the southern ocean down to rest” Jock Serong, Australian Author.

Winner of the People’s Choice Folk award in the 2018 South Australian Music Awards Laura writes whimsical songs with intriguing intimacy, full of love and purpose. With hints of youthful wisdom Laura’s song writing is matched with a stunning clarity and tone to create a beautiful soundscape.

Hill is a singer-songwriter in the great traditions of the craft: fearless, inventive, evocative and honest. A voice that has to be heard to be believed: with range, depth and searing emotion. Songs delivered heart-on-sleeve, tempered with a gentle wit, laughter and a thousand tiny insights.

To understand the beauty of Laura Hill’s songwriting, you need to understand a little of the geography. Laura hails from McLaren Vale and a life spent on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, one of those outrageously privileged places where rolling green hills and vineyards meet an untouched coast, and the sun shines warm and fair over all. Everytime she performs her compositions somehow capture the magic of the landscape, a feeling or a subtle emotion. Laura’s solo shows are a meandering journey from quirky observations on life and love, to the soaring vocals and warm compentent electric and acoustic guitar that charactise her original compositions making her one of South Australia’s finest female singer songwriters.

Laura has supported, toured and shared the stage with the likes of Passenger (UK) Matt Corby, Wes Carr (Buffalo Tales), Tim Rogers, Kim Churchill, Matt McHugh, Ash Grunwald, Colin Hay, Mark Seymor, Juzzie Smith, Shaun Kirk, Tom Richardson, Ollie English and many more.

Praise For Laura Hill

"There are no gimmicks attached to Hill, she is a no frills vocalist and she doesn’t need anything more than voice alone" – Vulture Magazine

"Soothing, beautiful and tranquil … a superb storyteller" – Glam Adelaide

"There's a reason why Laura Hill is considered a top South Aussie act" – Music SA

“Her angelic, expressive vocals were supported by dexterous acoustic and electric guitar, while accompanying herself with percussion played with both feet. Original tunes of great quality and style” – In Daily

“… busting with feel good summer vibes.” – BSide Magazine

“ 5 stars. Hill greeted the audience in a conversational manner before playing her first song – unaccompanied. She pushed herself to new limits with a powerful performance, tempered by her sweet voice and masterful use of the guitar, her fingers flying over the fret board” – Glam Adelaide Fringe Review

"Exquisite" – The AU Review

"With her new EP, Powdered Sunshine, Laura Hill proves that she can tackle soulful folk without letting it melt into sugary spin … Nothing is allowed to linger too long; folk twang is offset by pop cheer or melancholy lyricism. The glimmer of tooth and claw that she bares is refreshing and exciting" – RipItUp Magazine

"With themes like love, life and travel featuring strongly in Hill’s lyrics, it’s hard not to be swept away in your mind to a calm coastal town where the sun always shines" – Arts Hub
