Description

Why Governments Punish the Unemployed and How to Fight Back

Owen Bennett, President, Australian Unemployed Workers Union

Pedagogy in the Pub is a series of monthly discussions, facilitated by some of the keenest educational thinkers from Australia and abroad.

In May, the discussion will be led by Owen Bennett, President of the Australian Unemployed Workers Union (AUWU), an organisation dedicated to fighting for the rights and dignity of unemployed workers. He is currently writing his PhD thesis on the employment services industry.

Owen will discuss the challenges faced by unemployed young people today and will reflect on the work of the AUWU supporting the more than 750,000 unemployed workers in Australia.

Before you come, Owen invites participants to engage with The Problem of a Full Employment Economy by Victor Quirk. You can also learn more about the work of the Australian Unemployed Workers Union: http://unemployedworkersunion.com/

Pedagogy in the Pub will run between 6pm--8pm in the following format:

  • Dinner and Drinks: 6:00 - 6:45pm (guests are invited to order from the Lincoln Hotel menu at their own expense)
  • Guest Speaker: 6:45 - 7:00pm
  • Open Discussion: 7:00 - 8:00pm

Pedagogy in the Pub is open to all. Please circulate among your friends and colleagues.
