Description

The Politics of Gender, Sexuality and Pedagogy in a ‘Post-Truth World’

A special Pedagogy in the Pub discussion event with sj miller (NYU) and Roz Ward

Pedagogy in the Pub is a series of monthly discussions, facilitated by some of the keenest educational thinkers from Australia and abroad. Each month, our speakers draw on their expertise to explore ways that can reimagine the ‘promise of education’ in a ‘post-truth’ world.

This special Pedagogy in the Pub discussion offers scholars, activists, and pedagogues the opportunity to engage with the challenges of the ‘post-truth’ world for people of diverse genders, sexes, and sexualities. A post-truth world is one in which “objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief” (Washington Post). sj and Roz will participate in a discussion led by Dr Emily Gray around the politics of gender, sexuality, and the possibilities of pedagogy in the post-truth world.

Pedagogy in the Pub is open to all at no charge, regardless of conference participation or attendance.

Keynote speakers

sj miller, NYU

sj’s research is framed around transdisciplinary perspectives on social justice, which cut across theory, epistemology and pedagogy and links across socio-spatial justice, Urban Education, preservice and in-service secondary language arts teacher dispositions, and marginalized/undervalued student literacies and identities.

Roz Ward

Roz Ward co-founded Safe Schools Coalition Victoria (SSCV) and developed and directed the program from 2010 until 2017 at La Trobe University. SSCV provided the model for the federally funded national Safe Schools initiative that received international recognition for best practice from UNESCO. Roz is also a political activist involved in a range of campaigns including the fight for equal marriage, refugee rights, indigenous self-determination, and rebuilding rank and file trade unionism.
