Description

Class fictions, frictions, and fragilities

Professor Jane Kenway

According to the commentariat, recent elections and events in the UK, the USA and Australia have put social class back on the political agenda. In this talk, Professor Jane Kenway will point the ways that this ‘re-emergence’ of class is represented in the so-called post truth era. But she will also argue that class commentary has seldom been a matter of truth or post truth. Rather it has involved continuous struggles over meaning, mattering and materiality. Professor Kenway will illustrate this point through examples from recent educational contests in Australia.

Jane Kenway is Professorial Fellow at Melbourne University, Emeritus Professor at Monash University. Her research expertise is in socio-cultural studies of education in the context of wider social and cultural change, focusing particularly on power and politics.

Her most recent, jointly written, book is Class Choreographies; Elite Schools and Globalisation (Oct. 2016, Palgrave). Before you come, learn more about her work: http://www.palgrave.com/gb/book/9781137549600#reviews
