Event description

Dear Participant

Thank you for registering with The Makers Studio Central Coast Inc. for ’DENIM NEVER DIES’ with Pearl Red Moon on 26/27 October 2019

Venue: 8-10 Russell Drysdale St East Gosford (rear of the Lions Club Hall)

Time:10:00 to 16:00 each day

A two day workshop with textile artist Pearl Red Moon.

The workshop will cover a number of skills that will be experimented with and applied to creating a completed jacket or coat by the finish of class.

Students should bring a selection of second hand, used garments to the workshop to be taken apart and re-constructed into a jacket or coat. A variety of surface embellishment techniques will be explored to incorporate into the new garment, such as

  • Free painting techniques with fabric paint
  • Stenciling with fabric paint
  • Patchwork
  • Applique
  • Machine stitching, free motion and ideas for using pre-programmed embroidery stitches imaginatively
  • Hand stitched embellishment

Class requirements:

  • Sewing machine – plus free motion embroidery foot (please read note about free motion embroidery at the end)
  • Your usual sewing toolkit, such as pins, needles, measuring tapes, scissors, etc…
  • A selection of used denim clothes. You may use different weights of denim, including chambray (many denim shirts are chambray), a variety of shades is OK, for example - dark and light blues and/or blacks, plain or prints
  • Sewing thread of colour to match your denim, plus some different colours for embellishment, such as red, bright green, yellow…? Don’t bring special embroidery thread, ordinary sewing thread is fine and has the same matte finish as the denim cotton fabric.
  • DMC embroidery thread. To coordinate with the denim bring a variety of blues, from light to dark. A few other colours for potential decorative use.
  • Hand sewing embroidery needles.
  • #6 long darner needle for sashiko stitching (or your preferred needles if you’re familiar with sashiko)
  • Brushes, cheap house painting brushes are fine, bring one each approximately 2” and 4” wide. Teacher will loan other brushes.
  • Roll of 3cm wide masking tape
  • Optional: I highly recommend bringing a hair blow dryer to help dry off paints quickly.
  • Optional: latex disposable gloves if you’re squeamish about paint under the fingernails.
  • Optional: apron or over size shirt to protect your good clothes.

For contribution of $10 per student the teacher will provide

Use of Permaset fabric paints as needed in the workshop

Loan of stencils

Loan of small stencil brushes

NOTE: Free motion embroidery and sewing machines

Please know how to use your machine for free motion embroidery in advance of class as the teacher won’t have time to set up individual machines and give students special tuition on the spot. Also, be aware that not all sewing machines do free motion embroidery well. You can still do the workshop and learn the many other techniques even if you can’t do this specific part of the class on FME. You could just observe for the 1-2 hours of this part of the tuition.

The workshop address is:

Venue: The Makers Studio Central Coast Inc - 8 Russell Drysdale Street (rear of the hall) East Gosford

Saturday 26th& Sunday 27thOctober 2019. 10am – 4 pm each day – please wear closed in shoes. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Please bring your own lunch.

You will have the opportunity to enjoy many experimental applications. We look forward to seeing you at the workshop ready to be inspired.

Warm regards
