Event description

Description

Amnesty International and Monash International Development Practice Association (MIDPA), invite you to join us and our panellists to discuss the ‘Understanding the over-representation of Indigenous youth populations in the Australian justice system’.

The aim of this event is to provide an opportunity to engage with professionals from a range of backgrounds and peoples with lived experience of the youth justice system, in order to better understand the issues surrounding Indigenous youth incarceration and their over-representation in the justice systems. We aim to provide a space where both Indigenous, academic and professional perspectives come together to provide a deeper understanding of this complex historical issue. The discussions will enable an unpacking of the following:

Issues around, and root causes of, the over-representation of indigenous youth populations in the Australian justice system.
Misconduct and violation of the principles regarding Child Protection. For example, the events at Don Dale Youth Detention Centre, made public in 2014, and the recent case of Barwon Prison, where youths were held in an adult prison, having been transferred there after a riot at the Parkville Youth Justice Centre.
Commentary on the recent report released by the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous peoples, the recommendations made to the Australian Government as well as an exploration of the suggested National Plan of Action targeting the issue and its efficacy.
And finally, explore the possibilities of community-based approaches addressing recidivism in indigenous communities.

Each panellist will introduce their topic, after a short introduction and welcome from organisers. This will be followed by a cross-panel discussion, moderated by Eleanor Gordon, Deputy Director, Masters of International Development Practice, Monash University. We will then open the discussion to the room and have a Q&A for up to 30 minutes.

Panellists:

Dylan Voller - Former Detainee of Don Dale, Northern Territory
