Panel Discussion: Sydney Subcultures and Club-cultures

From Les Girls to Monsta Gras, alternative club culture in Sydney continues to be an important platform for community-building and the development of experimental performance practices. Within the context of gentrification and shifting urban dynamics, this panel discussion will explore the significance and precarity of Sydney’s club nights and venues from the 1970s to now.

Moderated by artist, curator and publican Emma Price, speakers include artist and founding member of queer artist collective Glitter Militia and Club Ate Justin Shoulder as well as the Co-Founders of Club Kooky and more TBA.

Presented as part of the exhibition The Beehive at UNSW Galleries.

The Beehive was produced by Philippa Bateman. An Enigma Machine Production. An Artbank + ACMI Commission. Exhibition runs from 5 January to 23 February 2019.

This event forms part of the ‘Radical Sydney’ public program. Taking its title from Terry Irving and Rowan Cahill's book on dissident politics and actions in Sydney this program of talks, documentary screenings and performances engages with the histories and futures of local activism concerned with housing, public space, sexuality and gender.

This event is generously supported by Young Henrys beer.

UNSW Galleries acknowledges the Bidjigal and Gadigal peoples of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of the land upon which it stands.
