Description

The day provides the opportunity for teachers, school staff and anyone working with young people to gain an understanding of what trauma is and how it impacts on a person’s ability to learn. A focus of the day is attachment and the importance of positive attachments and the impact of trauma within a learning environment.

Key Note Speakers

Philip Riley

Phil Riley, a former school principal, spent 16 years in schools before moving to the tertiary sector. He is Australia’s foremost researcher into Adult Attachment processes in school classrooms, awarded ~$8 million in research funding including three prestigious Australian Research Council Grants. Phil won:

  • the inaugural Monash Researcher Accelerator award in 2010
  • two Dean’s awards (Excellence by an Early Career Researcher and Excellence in Innovation and External Collaboration) at Monash in 2011
  • the International Study Association of Teachers and Teaching Award for Most Outstanding Article of 2014
  • the Australian Council for educational Leaders Victoria Research Award in 2017.

He has presented international Keynote addresses in Germany, Canada, Belgium, Ireland, France, Finland, Hungary, South Africa and New Zealand and numerous Keynote addresses and workshops in all states and territories of Australia.

Michelle Montgomery

Michelle Montgomery is the Trauma Informed Education Specialist at KidsXpress. Michelle is ideally positioned within the education and mental health professions having worked as a youth worker, teacher, school counsellor and behaviour specialist in government, private and school settings for 15 years. Michelle works with schools and other organisations across Australia implementing best practice in trauma-informed care. She combines practical front-line experience in schools (including several years working in specialist behaviour settings) with serious research. She has post-graduate qualifications and experience in teaching, psychology and counselling, and is currently completing her PhD research on the impact of student trauma on NSW schools.
