Description

Other ways of knowing: Understanding Aboriginal trauma, workshop #08

1 Day workshop, Monday 15th October

This interactive workshop will examine Aboriginal ways of being, communication and engagement styles. Topics covered include the Strong Spirit Model, cultural identity, spiritual experiences, intergenerational and complex trauma, and learning how to support people in their healing journeys from a culturally appropriate framework.

The workshop also provides information, resources and strategies for working with Aboriginal people within a southern Australian context. Participants will explore ways of doing things "differently” from an organisational position that is culturally inclusive and appropriate. The aim is to increase engagement and communication between non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal people and their communities. A workbook and other resources are provided to each participant.

Presenter: Janine Cattanach, Director, The Cultural Consultancy Group. Janine is a Marrithiyel woman traditionally from Woodycupildiya in the Northern Territory, now based in Geelong. Janine has extensive experience in Aboriginal mental health, trauma and ways of healing. She understands the core cultural issues experienced by Aboriginal people at both an organisational and community level. Janine has a Bachelor of Social Work though the Institute of Koori Education, Deakin University and is currently completing a Masters of Child Play Therapy.

Who should attend? AOD workers, students, allied health and welfare workers and others with an interest in working with and understanding Aboriginal people.

Cost: $220 (payable by credit card only).

Lunch: A light lunch including a vegetarian selection is provided.
