Description

One Day Program for GPs with Dr Ron Ehrlich & Ann Wilson

The Mouth as the Gateway to Health

The mouth provides a wealth of information about a person’s health. When you know what to look for you can deliver significantly better health outcomes to your patients.

The mouth is the beginning of the respiratory and digestive systems, the site of the two most common human infections (i.e. gum disease and tooth decay) as well as being highly innervated neurologically.

It is surprising that it so frequently ignored when treating a patient’s general health.

When oral health and function are compromised the health of rest of the body is affected.

Who should attend?

This one-day program has been designed to equip GPs with the skills necessary to identify and assess problems within the oral cavity and understand their potential impact on whole body health.

By understanding the dynamics of the oral cavity, new insights can be gained, and common treatments for patients can be more effective and complementary to other treatment protocols.

Program learning outcomes

  • Define the key elements of a complete oral health assessment
  • Describe the two most common infections occurring in the population, relevant treatment options and the vectors by which chronic inflammation and biocompatibility have the potential to impact on systemic health
  • Assess the impact of diet on craniofacial development, potential airway problems and possible impact on posture
  • Identify the link between parafunction (e.g. clenching and grinding), sleep-disordered breathing and chronic pain of the head, neck and jaw (e.g. chronic tension headaches)

This Active Learning Program is approved by the RACGP QI&CPD program.

Total Points: 40 Category I points

Course Relevance to General Practice

Oral health is a significant contributor to the burden of disease in Australia, with oral diseases among the most common and costly to our society. Oral conditions are the third highest cause of preventable hospital admissions, with more than 63,000 Australians hospitalised each year.1 National expenditure in Australia on oral health ranks second highest after cardiovascular disease at $8.3 billion (2012–13). (RACGP – OH16)

Oral health is a significant, yet often overlooked aspect of your patients’ general health. Over 90% of the adult population have some form of gingivitis; over 45% of adults have periodontitis, rising to over 70% in those 65 years and older; more than 90% of adults 20-64 years old have had some decay in their permanent teeth; over 90% of the population have insufficient space for all 32 teeth they have evolved to have affecting the space available in the upper airway.

An understanding of common dental infections and malocclusion (narrow jaw and crowded teeth) and their impact on general health is important for all GPs and allied health professionals. This program will explore a holistic approach to the many links between oral health and general health.
