FEBRUARY VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT FORUM with the City of Sydney, Social Policy and Programs Team.

Not-for-profit organisations have the mission to provide an inclusive service that reflects and supports the diverse community that they serve. However, very often they are faced with barriers of engaging service users/clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds due to language barriers or needing to develop culturally responsive engagement strategies.

Sydney is a culturally diverse and vibrant city, and international students form part of Sydney’s fabric with over 178,000 international students enrolled in the universities and colleges with 25,000 living in the City of Sydney Local government area (the City). The international education sector has created over 50,000 full time jobs in the City. As a City, it not only benefits us economically, international students also bring their culture, language, skills and innovation with them, and many of them also strive to learn and contribute to the local communities. These are potential untapped resources for the NFP sector to help organisations to reach their diverse community, deliver culturally responsive services, build staff cultural competency and enrich the organisation’s skills and resource gaps. The City of Sydney is a leader in advocating and promoting best practice in international student engagement. It has implemented a range of policies and strategies to leverage the skills, knowledge and expertise that international students bring to the City.

Our presenter has developed and managed several award winning programs championing volunteering, international students and community development. One of those programs is the City’s International Students Leadership and Ambassador Program; this program uses a strength based and people centred approach in engaging international students. The Program won the inaugural International Student Engagement Award 2014 and Youth Work Awards 2018 – Outstanding Work with Diverse Young people. Since 2013, over 120 Alumni from over 45 countries have participated in the 18 month program, and many of them have become leaders in both the business, government, education, media and start-up sectors in Australia and internationally.
