Event description

Description

Operation ‘Wasp’

Purpose: The WA students have been invited to participate in the North Costal regional exercise hosted by Wanneroo Joondalup SES, so they can gain valuable experience in a multi agency exercise and see the capabilities of volunteers and paid staff from all emergency sectors. The exercise will be conducted in real time including an official call out procedure from the DFES Communications centre to test the response time of the agencies involved.

Details:

Situation: The International Astrology Association is having their annual meeting to view a world wonder. During the event a massive freak storm has passed over the area, this had caused society members to become lost and trapped. Over 100 members are unaccounted for.

Mission: to locate, rescue, triage and treat all casualties affected by the storm.

Execution: Working together, multiple emergency service agencies such as the Bush Fire Brigade (BFBs), Volunteer Fire and Rescue (VFRS), State Emergency Service (SES), St Johns Event Health Service (EHS), Salvation Army and WA Student Paramedics (WASP) will use their skill sets to rescue and care for all casualties.

Admin/Logistics: 9th of June 2018, initial exercise briefing at 1730hrs. Held in a secret location north of Joondalup.

Finishing time will be roughly 0100hrs on the 10th of June

Patients will need to be at Wanneroo – Joondalup SES unit at 1600hrs for bus trip to location.

Second and third years can choose to be patients or be stationed in the triaging area to treat patients. Some students will be given the opportunity to participate as part of the rescue teams as the field medic.

As first year students have not yet completed a clinical unit they will only be able to volunteer as a patient. This will still give them the opportunity to witness the exercise and learn from both the rescue and treatment teams by observation (Plus it’ll be a lot of fun!)

Welfare and food will be provided at no cost for all participants.

Sign ups must be made by 5pm on the 30TH of May, any dietary requirement must also be sent to Hannah Revell by this time.

Transport: private vehicle parking is very limited and car pooling is recommended (ECU Joondalup is a perfect place to leave cars and share lifts from there)

Communications: For questions and queries contact Hannah Revell: hrevell@wastudentparamedics.com

Safety: all participants will be given a safety briefing before the exercise commences, safety officers will also be present.

PPE:
Students who are participating in the rescue teams must wear their green paramedicine pants and a long sleeve top/jumper, rescue/rubble gloves are also highly recommended. (No PPE, No Play)

Students who wish to participate in the triaging centre do not have to wear long sleeves but must wear green pants for identification purposes.

It is suggested that students participating as patients wear warm and old clothes, as moulage will be applied.

All students need to wear closed in shoes and should bring a torch if possible.

Tickets: No cost, open to all WASP and non-WASP student paramedics
