Game Description:

Operation Sealion - the (postponed) Invasion of Britain, September 1940. As the German commander, can you change history? As Churchill, can you throw the Nazis back into the sea and end the war early? Players control the land, sea, and air forces of Britain and Germany after the Battle of Britain is lost and Germany invades. Will the overpowering might of the Royal Navy be enough to see off the invaders, or will the Luftwaffe be able to stop them? Players do not have to adopt the real plans used by attackers and defenders. There is provision for up to 64 players in the game system but eight players +2 umpires is the minimum (two umpires and one player for C-in--C, land, sea, and air on each side). Each turn will be played to a time limit, communication will be only with umpires, turns will be shown on three maps, only one of which will be visible to each side, the game will go all day and night. Game system is in development but is based on the larger games played in England. Game will be played on at least three tables, one each for the two sides and the umpires. 2 extra umpires are needed.- must have a good knowledge of WW2 military history and tactics.

FAQs

The game won't go ahead without the minimum number of players but (with enough warning) extra players can be added as subordinates or politicians e.g. the RAF can be split into Bomber Command, Fighter Command, Coastal Command. Players who have laptops should bring them, along with pen & paper. The original version of this game involved many more players (and took 16 hours) and this is an experimental game so your patience may be required. No knowledge of World War 2 is required except for the umpires. Australian & NZ troops were involved. The game has been played several times in the UK with quite varied results.

Everything I've read says the Germans don't stand a chance, why would I play the German side?

New information has become available suggesting that the Germans had a better chance than is usually given, and this is built into the game. Nevertheless although the German player has a more powerful army and air force, and has the advantages of initiative and surprise, he has a tiny navy and must use everything well to win. The German side has won this game on several occasions when played as a large game in England.

What Australian troops were involved?

In October 1940 the two brigades of Australian troops in Britain were formed, with the addition of some other support troops, into the (incomplete) 9th Division. They were soon after sent to North Africa, and "the rest is history." If the Germans had invaded Britain earlier, though, they (and the NZ troops) would have been amongst the first to try to throw the Nazis back into the sea.

What characters will the players represent?

Three umpires - German, British, and Senior Umpire
Two C-in-C's: Churchill (British), Hitler or Keitel (German)
Two Land commanders: Brooke (British), von Brauchitsch (German)
Two Sea Commanders : Pound (British), Raeder (German)
Two Air Commanders: Newall (British), Goering (German)
The German C-in-C should really be Hitler but this may result in the player stomping around the convention trying to conquer every table (especially those on the eastern side of the hall) so if there is a problem with his presence in the hall the German C-in-C will be Keitel, the OKW Chief, instead.
