Event description

Description

OpenLAB showcases the varied practices and uses of technology in the creative industries, presented by Media Lab Melbourne in partnership with ACMI X. OpenLAB August features two presentations, first by artistic duo Betty Sargeant and Justin Dwyer, who will discuss their most recent collaborations – the interactive media artworks The Storytelling Machine and The Playground. These works use customised TouchDesigner systems that present real-time generative visuals. Our second speaker will be artist/designer Daniel Calvo who will be presenting some of his work, both personal and as part of Mosster Studio, to talk about his approach to the use of technology as an expressive artistic tool.

Join us post work for an evening of tech and talk from 6pm at ACMI X (2 Kavanagh St, Southbank) with a drink from our sponsors Shingleback & Red Knot Wine and Mountain Goat Beer.

This is a FREE ticketed event so be sure to sign up!

Daniel is the director at Mosster, an art + design + technology studio with a strong focus on delivering immersive interactive art experiences. Based in Melbourne, the studio explores digital and emerging technologies in the context of arts, education and society. As its lead technical director, Daniel focuses his efforts on exploring digital tools for the development of new methods of expression, interaction and play.

Strongly inspired by the opposing experiences of being raised in a densely urban city and spending long periods in natural places with little human presence, his work tends to explore music connected to visual, often cinematic, surreal and interactive elements. His practice has lead him to the production of immersive art experiences, live audiovisual presentations and experimental films.

His strength in these endeavours comes from a fluency in the usage of software and emerging technologies, which Daniel uses as the matter his artistic work is made of, rather than as the medium. For him, the exploration and usage of technology is about looking for ways to bring ideas to life, not as platforms that the ideas need to conform into.
