Drama | 94 mins (English/French) | Australian premiere
Directed by Bernard Bellefroid
Winning the Best Actress Award at the Montreal World Film Festival (shared by the film’s two stars, Rachael Blake and Lucie Debay), and nominated for four Magritte Awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Bernard Bellefroid, MELODY explores surrogacy and adoption in contemporary Europe.
Twenty eight year old Melody (Lucie Debay) lives in France where women may give birth anonymously. She wants to get her head above water financially and decides to be a surrogate mother in order to finance her hair salon – “it’s better than being poor”, she says. Emily, 48, (Rachael Blake - Sleeping Beauty, Truth, Lantana) lives in England where surrogacy is allowed, though under strict controls.
Although set primarily in England, Bellefroid tells the story in two languages: French and English. In tense situations Emily and Melody address each other using the familiarity of their own native language. But when conveying tenderness, each woman speaks in the other’s language. And each time the spoken language changes, it alters the emotional delivery of both actresses.
MELODY is essentially about the parent-child bond, adoption, and two lone individuals who progressively discover a mother and a daughter within each other. Although first appearing to have come from completely different worlds, the two women end up adopting each other. The bonds that emerge during this double maternity create doubts and raise questions that will leave the audience thinking and talking long after the film ends.
No refunds or exchanges so please choose carefully. Films are restricted to persons 15 years of age and over. Films may contain adult themes, sexual references, coarse language and violence. Program is subject to change without notice. Festival T&Cs apply (niff.com.au).
