'Hard Candy'

Hard Candy is an exhibition of large scale paintings featuring semi-abstract, exaggerated figures and images in sweet candy-coloured hues. Taking inspiration from the feminine ideal, everyday subjects and the digital cultural experience the paintings are created with thin layers of paint, scratchy gestural brush-strokes and fields of colour. The works create nonlinear narratives, piecing together elements and materials to retell an unknown story that exists somewhere between reality and a dream.

Rebecca Marshall, artist

'Duplicity'

In Duplicity, Holger Li explores the contrasts within the subconscious mind through the medium of paint. The works deliberately avoid preconceived images and instead are manifestations of abstraction and colour. Each individual piece begins with experimentation and spontaneity - in other words forcing of the subconscious mind to lead the body and brush. Canvases will typically be worked on for weeks or months before an image appears from the resulting shapes or patterns. Once an image appears the conscious mind takes over and develops the piece to completion. Completion ranges from an abstruse colour palette to a figurative composition. The duplicity is within us all. It is the double life we lead on a daily basis, through our work, use of social media, and more commonly within our own mind.

Lisa Kalker, Curator

'Body Talk'

Body Talk brings together six contemporary artists who will each investigate what the body means to them in their individual practices. The body is often seen as a vehicle for a broader conversation around the subject of beingness, a physical location

which can represent and question the human experience.

Body Talk spans across the mediums of drawing, photo media, painting, print, and embroidery. The artists' diversity is employed to uncover similarities, not differences and talk to the commonalities found in the human condition, uncovering aspects of the physical world in its universal reliability.

The exhibitions run until 7 March 2020.
