Event description

Description

Come behind the scenes and tour our intriguing Conservation Lab to see how rare and fragile collection items are cared for. The lab is located in Upper Swinburne Hall, which was built in 1887 as part of a wing adjoining the original building facing Swanston Street.

The Library has always been a centre for learning and many creative institutions have made it their home over the years. This legacy can be traced through Upper Swinburne Hall, which housed the National Gallery of Victoria Art School and then Melbourne Museum, before being fitted out as a purpose-built Library Conservation Lab in 2006.

Today, conservators in the lab treat several thousand works each year, from textiles and photographs to paper, artworks and books. This fascinating tour will reveal both the colourful history of the space and the day-to-day experience inside a working lab. Listen as an expert conservator discusses examples of their work, the use of specialist equipment and the role of conservation in the Library.

Presented as part of Open House Melbourne.
