Open House 2021: The Neighbourhood Justice Centre
Event Information
About this event
The Neighbourhood Justice Centred opened in Collingwood in 2007. Committed to addressing the underlying causes of offending to stop the cycle of crime, staff at the NJC work with the local community to increase access to justice.
Several design features set the NJC apart from other Magistrates’ courts. These include a non-intimidating security model, use of natural light and ventilation and provision of quiet spaces and a children’s area. Also unique to the NJC is its housing of a multi- jurisdictional court and an integrated team of community, court and client services staff under one roof.
The NJC site and building have a rich history. Its site once housed a boot makers, a police station and a TAFE. The building exterior showcases elements of Modernist/ Art Deco design dating back to its initial design by Percy Everett in 1945. The building’s interior, redesigned by Lyons Architects in 2006, reflects principles of therapeutic jurisprudence, incorporating accessible community meeting spaces and a welcoming environment for visitors.
