Open Book: Family secrets
Event Information
About this Event
Family secrets have the power to bring a family together, or tear it apart.
For memoirists Betty O'Neill and Susan Francis, unlocking the family secrets connected to their respective fathers were life-changing - and confronting.
As well as revealing untold truths from decades before, discovering the hidden secrets that had impacted on their families in unique ways sparked individual journeys of self-discovery that helped both women come to terms with their past and the legacy that had been left for them.
Susan Francis is the author of The Love That Remains - an exploration of adoption, unconditional love and the lies we tell to safeguard our happiness.
Betty O'Neill is the author of The Other Side of Absence - a story about how Betty pieced together a picture of her father as a Polish resistance fighter, a survivor of Auschwitz and Gusen concentration camps, an exile in post-war England, and a migrant to Australia.
Betty and Susan are in conversation with author Claire Halliday (Things My Mother Taught Me ,Things My Father Taught Me) to discuss the raw wounds family secrets reveal - and how to heal them.
