About this event

The current COVID-19 context is presenting new challenges and applying significant pressure on people and business.

Pressing pause on human rights isn’t an option. Businesses will need to demonstrate to governments, regulators, business partners, investors and other stakeholders that they can uphold their responsibility to respect human rights.

This online 101 workshop will help you understand your organisation’s responsibilities, how to address adverse human rights impacts and the steps to prevent and address these impacts.

Led by Vanessa Zimmerman, Director and Chair, Human Rights, Global Compact Network Australia this online 101 workshop will introduce the concept of human rights and explain what is expected of business under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) - the authoritative global reference point on business and human rights.

The online 101 workshop will explore:

  • What human rights are
  • How human rights are relevant to business
  • The business case for respecting human rights
  • Key elements of business responsibility in respect to the UNGPs including drafting a human rights policy, human rights due diligence and remediation
  • How the UNGPs fit with other corporate sustainability frameworks and standards
  • Q&A with Diana Telford, Environment, Social and Governance Manager at ANZ

As a special initiative of the UN Secretary-General, the United Nations Global Compact is a call to companies everywhere to align their operations and strategies with ten universal principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Launched in 2000, the mandate of the UN Global Compact is to guide and support the global business community in advancing UN goals and values through responsible corporate practices. With more than 12,000 companies and 3,000 non-business signatories based in over 160 countries, and more than 69 Local Networks, it is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world.

Locally, the Global Compact Network Australia (GCNA) brings together signatories to the UN Global Compact, including more than 30 ASX 100 companies and other major corporates, non-profits and universities, to advance the private sector’s contribution to sustainable development through the universal framework provided by the UN-mandated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Ten Principles. We lead, enable and connect business and stakeholders to create a sustainable future by supporting businesses to act responsibly and helping them find opportunities to drive positive business outcomes.
