SkillsIQ, on behalf of the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC), is undertaking a cross-sector project to address the common skills needs of industries in relation to using online & social media in the workplace.


Over the past twelve months, SkillsIQ has undertaken an extensive multi-channel consultation (Phase 1) to gather views and feedback to identify the common skills needs of industries in relation to consumer engagement through online & social media.

The consultation has confirmed that there is overwhelming support for training in skills to conduct online & social media consumer engagement across all industries. To ensure skills training continues to be in line with workforce needs, the following new cross-sector Training Package Products have been developed:

Units of Competency

Note: For the purposes of drafting, interim unit codes have been assigned.

  • OSM001 Use information and computer technology
  • OSM002 Identify social media and online platforms
  • OSM003 Maintain ethical and professional standards when working online
  • OSM004 Use social media and online tools
  • OSM005 Analyse performance of social media and online business tools
  • OSM006 Develop a basic website
  • OSM007 Develop and manage social media and online strategies
  • OSM008 Manage risk to organisational reputation in an online setting.

Skill Sets

  • Introduction to social media and online business tools Skill Set
  • Basic social media implementation Skill Set
  • Engage customers through social media and online presence Skill Set
  • Develop an online presence for customer engagement Skill Set.

National consultation on Draft 1 of the Training Package Products is now open for your feedback.

Webinars are being scheduled nationally during November 2018 in order to:

  • Provide an overview of the Training Package Product development process
  • Outline the eight Draft 1 Units of Competency and four Draft 1 Skill Sets developed
  • Gather initial feedback from participants regarding Draft 1 Training Package Products
  • Provide an outline of the SkillsIQ Feedback Forum, and other channels for providing feedback.
