Fruit Growers Tasmania invites growers of all berry types to come along to our "Season Preparation Workshop"

About this Event

Recent agrichemical changes, labour shortages and workplace stress are tipped to cause challenges for TAS berry growers in 2020-21. Find out how your business can be better prepared to meet these challenges before the harvest gets into full swing!

Workshop content is aimed at berry production managers, agronomists, and officers in charge of seasonal workforce attraction, recruitment and management.

Session 1: Seasonal labour - 9:30am

  • Welcome, reflection and outlook for the year ahead - Claire McCrory, TAS Berry IDO, FGT. Claire will be speaking about her first year in the role of Berry Industry Development Officer and what we can look forward to for year 2 of the program.
  • FGT update and current labour forecast - Peter Cornish, CEO, FGT. Peter will be speaking about his first year as CEO of FGT, progress in the berry space and the labour forecast for the coming 2020-21 berry season.
  • Covid safety and on farm risk mitigation - Bron Ford, Industry Development Officer, QLD. Bron will be speaking about Covid safety on farm and how QLD have survived their berry 2020 season.
  • Managing and attracting labour during a pandemic season - Rodney Prestia, iComply QLD. Rodney will be speaking about maintaining a workforce during a pandemic and lessons learnt during the QLD 2020 berry season.
  • Update on workplace relations and conditions - Andrew Cameron, Primary Employers Tasmania, TAS. Andrew will be speaking about the changes in the Horticulture Award and other relevant workplace relation matters.

Interval: Lunch and networking - 12:00pm

Session 2: Mental health first aid - 1:00pm

  • Mental health - John Clark, Rural Alive and Well, TAS. John will be speaking about the importance of mental health, training courses available for staff, and suicide prevention.

Session 3: Agrichemical use - 2:00pm

  • Crop protection chemicals registered for use in Tasmania - David Rumbold, NuFarm, VIC. David will be giving an update on the agrichemicals registered for use in Tasmania and a sneak-peak on the new chemistry entering the market.
  • Concentrate Vs dilute spraying - Brenden Greene, NuFarm, TAS. Brendan will discuss the differences between concentrate and dilute spraying and what this means for growers in terms of performance of fungicide and labour efficiencies.
