Event description
This is an online discussion on the seminal text 'Children with Disabilities: Reading and Writing the Four Blocks Way'.

About this Event

There are frequent calls for improved literacy instruction in our schools with a focus on the place of phonics within reading programs. However, some students with disability may face particular challenges with phonics and literacy and require instruction that can respond to their individual differences. In this online discussion we will explore the Four- Blocks Framework of guided reading, self-selected reading, writing and working with words. The Four Blocks Framework is a research-based, comprehensive approach to literacy that incorporates systematic phonics while supporting fluency, comprehension and motivation to read and write.

Facilitators:

Dr Leanne Longfellow from South Australia and Nathalie Parry from Victoria will facilitate this discussion. They are educators with extensive experience teaching literacy to students with disabilities.

Questions:

Do I need to read the Four-Blocks prior to the discussion?

We encourage you to do some prior reading but it is not essential.

I'm not convinced that the Four-Blocks Framework is the best approach to teach literacy. Can I still participate?

We encourage everyone to participate in this professional discussion, even if you do not believe the Four-Blocks Framework is the best approach. We are open to professional and thoughtful discussions on how to utilise students' strengths to provide effective literacy instruction.
