Event description

Description

EVENT: One day symposium: The linguistic theory of Michael Halliday and its contribution to Academic Language and Learning (ALL) practice

WHEN: Friday 30 November, 2018

WHERE: Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn Victoria

There is no charge for registration

Michael Halliday, the founder of Systemic Functional Linguistics, died earlier this year. Halliday’s contribution to our understandings of language and its uses in the world is acknowledged as being huge, described variously as ‘catalytic’ and ‘revolutionary’ (Cope and Kalantzis, 1994), including in our field of ALL.

The symposium is framed around the following aims:

  1. To generally pay tribute to the contribution of Michael Halliday to our field.
  2. To host a range of papers exploring ways in which Halliday’s linguistics have informed (and can inform) ALL work
  3. To introduce Halliday’s ideas to AALL members who are less familiar with SFL’s foundational concepts.

Pre-symposium workshop:

In line with the third of the aims above, a workshop will be held at the beginning of the day to introduce participants to some of the key concepts in Systemic-Functional theory, especially as outlined in Halliday’s central work – An Introduction to Functional Grammar.

TIME: 9.00-10.30am

Delegates should indicate on the registration form whether they’d like take part in the workshop.

There is no charge for this part of the event.

The symposium:

The symposium itself will consist of a range of formats: keynote addresses; parallel papers; roundtable presentations; and a panel discussion.

TIME: 10.30am-5.15pm

The program will be provided to delegates in advance of the event. We will also make available some pre-symposium reading for those interested.
