Oncology Series

Since 2002 Dr. Weber has been giving seminars to professionals on the subject of oncology.

Daniel Weber’s work did not go unnoticed in China. Biometric Pathways in Breast Cancer: Treating the Patient and the Disease

The breast cancer stem cell (BCSC) hypothesis has grown in the cancer research community. These BCSCs comprise of a small subpopulation of

cells within the tumour mass which exhibit stem cell-like characteristics and have emerged as being responsible for tumour development, recurrence and metastasis in BCa. The complexity of control of gene expression in BCSC is commonly driven by a myriad of signalling pathways triggered by extracellular signals, mutations and epigenetic control. Thus, some signalling pathways have been highlighted in BCa.

Nuclear factor-kappa B (NFk-B), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT-3), wingless-type MMTV integration site family (Wnt)/β- catenin, Hedgehog and NOTCH.

Moreover, these cells can also be influenced by the tumour microenvironment, for instance, hypoxia (HIF-1), VEGF, inflammatory cytokines including TNF-a, myriad coagulation factors and other bio-pathways. Given the importance

of signalling pathways and tumour microenvironment for breast cancer, this seminar focuses on the relationship between cellular signalling and BCSCs and its therapeutic implications.
