Event description

Description

To celebrate National Carer’s Week, the School of Health and Social Development will host a screening of the intimate documentary ‘On Richard’s Side’. Richard’s mother Deidre Croft will be joining us from Western Australia. Following the screening and lunch, a Q&A will be held with Deidre. Deakin University’s Dr Jo Watson will facilitate a discussion about supporting people with intellectual disability who communicate differently to have their preferences heard through decision making. Jo is an internationally recognised researcher in this area.

Filmed over three decades, ‘On Richard’s Side’ follows the story of 35 year old Richard. Living with a severe intellectual disability since birth, Richard has relied on the care and love of his parents, Deirdre and Charlie, friends, family and support workers. Upon experiencing a major change in his life, his mother Deirdre is now fiercely committed to finding answers to the questions: who will care for Richard in the future and what will happen to her son when she is no longer around?

This story, above all else, brings to light the need for a more inclusive and caring community. Interdependence is in our DNA.

Carers and other community members interested in the unique issues specific to caring for people with a disability are invited to join us for a day of reflection, celebration and sharing.

Barwon Health Carer Support are able to assist with respite if required, in order to attend this event. Please call 1800 052 222 to discuss.
