Located within Parramatta Park, Old Government House is one of the World Heritage listed Australian Convict Sites and a must-see on the Great Western Walk. Discover the story of an expanding colonial settlement in New South Wales when you visit the oldest public building in Australia, owned by The National Trust (NSW).

On the first floor of the Georgian house is the fascinating 'Enquiring Minds' science exhibition, which will delve into the eighteenth and nineteenth century voyages of discovery which combined the exploration of the great southern land with scientific advances in navigation, astronomy, mapping, and botanical collecting.

As a government residence, Old Government House was at the centre of these discoveries. Learn about Governor King's arrival in 1800, bringing with him the first appointed colonial botanist, George Caley who was based at Parramatta, using Old Government House to dry his specimens. See Governor Brisbane's star catalogue; the first chart of stars in the southern hemisphere, produced from his observatory in Parramatta Park.

Enquiring Minds will examine how these discoveries added to the knowledge of the world at a time when new theories of evolution were being developed and exotic Australian specimens created a sensation in Europe.

Enjoy interactive features developed by Western Sydney University which offer the visitor an immersive experience. Afterwards, bring a picnic and enjoy exploring the 200 acres of Parramatta Park by foot or bike, or dine in the courtyard restaurant, Lachlans.

Old Government House is open Tuesdays - Sundays 10am - 4pm. Our first hourly session is at 10am, with last entry at 3pm.

From June 2021, tickets will be valid for entry anytime between 10am and 3pm for the date purchased.
