Mark Stickells
Director, Energy and Minerals Institute, the University of Western Australia. Mark was appointed as EMI’s Director in 2015 succeeding EMI’s foundation Director, Tim Shanahan. Since 2015 Mark’s focus has been on UWA-wide innovation, cultural transformation and industry engagement that is closely aligned with State and National innovation strategies. He plays a central role in liaising with multidisciplinary networks across UWA, Australia and the world to create partnerships and collaboration between researchers and business, industry and entrepreneurs to help bring new ideas and technologies to market. Prior to starting at UWA, Mark was the CEO of the WA Energy Research Alliance. He has extensive experience in joint-venture R&D management, major infrastructure and collaborative research programs. Mark is a Board member or advisor to several UWA ventures and actively engaged in the innovation ecosystem in Perth. Mark is also a thought leader and advocate for Perth’s regional role as energy city and innovation hub. Mark is enthusiastic about developing new ways of engagement, unlocking the wealth of talent at UWA and its partners in order to help drive productivity and economic growth for Australia, and address major energy, resource and environmental challenges of our time.

Brian Haggerty
Currently Vice President Innovation Capability at Woodside with responsibility for sustainability of Woodside’s capability including both industry collaborative innovation program and internal processes. Brian’s previous positions include VP Wheatstone (Woodside’s interest in Chevron-operated Wheatstone and Woodside-operated Julimar Brunello gas field development); VP Technology (responsible for identifying, and where necessary developing, appropriate technologies as required by Woodside’s current and potential exploration, development and operations activities); VP LNG Development (responsible for the technical front-end development of Australian and international LNG and gas opportunities). He has 37 years oil and gas industry experience in Woodside and Shell with responsibilities in offshore facilities and onshore technical developments (LNG, gas to liquids), projects, operations and business development. Brian is a Chartered Professional Engineer (Australia) and holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in engineering and an MBA. He is member of Engineers Australia, Society of Petroleum Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers. Graduate Member Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Woodside has a strong history in innovating, dating back more than 50 years. Ten years ago Woodside built the first modularised LNG Trains and now aims to take this to a new level through patent pending Next GenerationTM LNG technology. Well construction and subsea technologies have enabled lower development cost and boosted production. Today Woodside is leading the application of data science in the oil and gas industry. Woodside’s FutureLab program aims to develop collaborative innovation with universities, research institutes, start-up companies and partners in oil and gas and other industries. Brian Haggerty will discuss Woodside’s approach to collaborative innovation.
