Take a guided tour through the Oaklands Wetland and learn about the important role it plays in our community

About this event

Oaklands Wetland Guided Tour

The Oaklands Wetland, sitting within the City of Marion, plays an increasingly vital role in our community. Not only does it provide a home to an extensive array of wildlife such as waders, cockatoos, ducks and river red gums, it is also a water factory, cleaning up to 400 million litres of stormwater each year for use on local playing fields, street trees and more than 31 local parks and reserves.

Meet your guide David at the Oaklands Education Centre (on the western corner of the reserve bordering Oaklands Road), and learn how this innovative system cleans water as it moves slowly through a series of ponds, which each use natural processes in various ways to clean the water.  It takes three days for the water to move through the wetland, where it can be injected into aquifers almost 100m below ground.

These tours will help you understand the complexities of wetlands and how the City of Marion is doing its part to be an environmentally conscientious organisation.

Each attendee will be required to check in via our QR code or to fill out an SA Health Attendance record, inclusive of a mobile phone number or email address. Written records will be kept by City of Marion in case of a COVID outbreak and destroyed after 1 month.

Please note this is a one-hour tour with 30 minutes allocated to a presentation and another 30 minutes for a walking tour and may be difficult for those with mobility issues. Parking can be limited; please allow time for this.

The maximum number of participants for each tour is 20 people. Tours require a minimum of 2 registrations to proceed. At this stage, we cannot offer bespoke tours for larger groups.
