Description

You are invited to the G-TRAC Healthy Ageing Seminar Series. The Centre continues to run seminars and workshops on key topics relevant to the health and care of older people. Delivered by a range of experts in this field, consumers as well as health and aged care practitioners are welcome to attend.

The next seminar is focused on nutrition.

Controversies with Weight Management Strategies for Older Adults- Dr Natalie Luscombe-Marsh- B.Sc., PhD

Dr Luscombe-Marsh will examine the consequences of unintentional changes in body weight, when and how to identify risk of malnutrition, the issues with the current Australian Dietary guidelines for this population, and key strategies that should be implemented to better manage the weight and health of older adults.

Causes and Consequences of Weight Loss in the Ageing Person- Donna Preston- RN, MNP, Grad. Dip CHPC

The factors contributing to under-nutrition are many and varied and involve aspects such as functional capacity, psychosocial and physical. Identifying the factors that have impacted on under-nutrition in older adults is paramount in facilitating successful and sustained change.


The Speakers:

Dr Natalie Luscombe-Marsh- B.Sc., PhD

Natalie is a Research Scientist for the Nutrition and Health program for CSIRO Food, Nutrition and Bio-based products and an Affiliate Senior Lecturer at The University of Adelaide. Natalie has over 12 years of experience in designing clinical and community-based trials examining the effects of foods/dietary patterns, particularly those higher in protein, on outcomes including appetite, cardio-metabolic risk including blood glucose and lipid control, body composition, physical function, hospitalisations, and quality of life, in both younger and older adults. She is currently working colleagues within the Nutrition & Health and Food programs and numerous food companies and food services providers to develop new nutrition and lifestyle solutions for individuals with diabetes and older adults who are wanting to remain living at home and engaged with their communities.

Donna Preston- RN, MNP, Grad. Dip CHPC

Donna Preston is an Endorsed Nurse Practitioner in private practice. She received her Master of Nurse Practitioner and Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science, Community Health and Primary Care from the University of Adelaide. Her work focuses primarily on care of the older person in community and aged care settings and emphasis on minimising the risk of frailty. She supports initiatives in developing quality of life for older people.
