Event description

Description

Why this course?

Businesses and individuals who embrace Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) tools reap the benefits of more informed decision making, improved productivity and enhanced technical capability. Python is a great enabler of STEM because it is an easy to use programming language with powerful libraries for doing just about anything. The course is unique in that it is taught interactively and almost purely by example from a domain expert with over nine years of STEM experience.

Course content

Number crunching with Python is aimed at intermediate Python users who want to use Python's science libraries to process and display data and solve STEM problems. The course builds on knowledge gained in the intoductory course Getting started with Python. Having some tertiary level maths education is not a requirement, but will certainly help in understanding some of the course content. Some of the topics covered are as follows:

  • Processing multi-dimensional data with NumPy
  • Making publication-quality 2D and 3D plots with Matplotlib
  • Using Scipy to solve problems in statistics, signal processing, and linear algebra.

The day includes interactive exercises with worked solutions, designed to solidify knowlege covered.

What you need to bring

Participants will need to bring a laptop with a recent operating system installed and access to a normal user account. For the course we will be using the Anaconda Python Distribution for Python 2.7, available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux as a free download here.

The venue

The workshop is fully catered, and will be held in modern well-equipped training rooms in the heart of the Perth central business district. Abundant transport connectivity and parking options are available and a number of major hotels are nearby. Fast wifi and wired internet connectivity are available, as well as a large number of power points to keep your laptop charged. A virtual tour of the facilities is available here.
