After ten explosive Australian Poetry Slam heats held all over NSW, from Moree to Sydney, from Byron Bay to Wagga Wagga, we've gathering the best poets from each region to share their words with you in a mind-blowing state final! Listen in as they go head to head for two spots in the Australian Poetry Slam National Final.
Judged by randomly chosen members of the crowd, this is a wild night of words where you can click your favourite poet to victory and boo the judges if they give the wrong score.
One poet will be crowned NSW Slam Champion and offered an exciting residency!
Host: Sunil Badami
Sunil is a writer, performer and broadcaster. He has written for some of Australia’s best known and most prestigious publications, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, The Monthly, The Guardian, SBS Online, Meanjin, Southerly, Island, Westerly and more. His work has been anthologised around the world, including in Best Australian Stories, Best Australian Essays and Goldfish: The Best Writing of the Past Five Years and his radio documentary Riddle. Mystery. Enigma was shortlisted for the prestigious Prix Marulić in 2016.
The last Grand Champion of the long running quiz show Temptation, he continues to appear regularly on ABC Radio and TV. He lives in Sydney with his wife and young daughters.
Feature Guest: Sabrina D'Angelo
Sabrina is a performer and theatre-maker with a Bachelor of Acting (Theatre Nepean) and Post-Graduate Diploma in Puppetry (Victorian College of the Arts). She creates strange shows that mash together physical comedy, mime, puppetry and music in a heady cocktail of wonder and stupidity. She has been described as 'Kate Bush meets Mr. Bean', and is often seen playing with a bumbag. Recent credits include: Me and You (Melbourne Fringe 2016), Why Do I Dream? (Winner - Best Comedy, NZ Fringe 2014), Zen the Pigeon Girl (Rock Surfers Theatre Co.), 69S (Phantom Limb Company, Brooklyn Academy of Music, NYC) and Amanda Palmer (Sydney Festival). Sabrina has been the recipient of the Australia Council's ArtStart and JUMP Mentorship grants. In 2017 she will be an artist in residence as part of the Belvoir Artist Workshop. By day, Sabrina works as a Clown Doctor in children's hospitals across Sydney.
Australian Poetry Slam runs heats nationally from June - October, culminating in Regional, State and Territory Finals. Audiences choose powerful wordsmiths to tackle the mic at APS -National Final at Sydney Opera House on October 16 at 7pm.
One poet is chosen at Nationals to adventure out on an international writers' festival tour (among other cool prizes) as the Australian Poetry Slam Champion.
