Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

You’ll learn to intentionally spin a slubby thick and thin yarn. This yarn can be used as-is, or as input into later techniques.

We’ll discuss a few plying techniques and learn to create a spiral plied yarn and a coil/beehive yarn.

Finally, we’ll cover core-spinning techniques.

Novelty Yarn Class Materials List

Equipment needed:

  • Spinning wheel. If you have a bulky flyer bring it along, but most techniques can be done with the standard flyer.

  • 3 - 6 bobbins

  • Lazy Kate -- at least one, but you might find two helpful.

  • Niddy Noddy -- sample size or full size

Supplies needed:

  • Commercial 2-ply wool for core/plying. Can be purchased from Bendigo Woollen Mills, though any 2-ply will work. Some will show in the final product, so choose a colour that goes well with your wool top.

  • 100 grams dyed wool top. This needs to be about 20-25 microns -- merino (not superfine), corriedale, polwarth and blue-faced leicester are all appropriate. Should not be blended with other longer or shorter fibres (at least not for your first go). Something with two or more colours will work best, though solid colours are fine.

  • Fibres for corespinning -- Just about any fibre can be used for corespinning. You can use mohair, silk hankies, silk throwster’s waste, carded art batts, or ???

  • Rayon viscose thread (machine embroidery thread) -- you can find this at Spotlight. We won’t be using a lot. I’ll bring several colours that people can use if they don’t have any.

Optional supplies:

  • Beads
