Abstract: NoSQL, The history of the movement, what NoSQL actually means and why it matters to you!

The internet age heralded an explosion of data, both in volume and variety not previously seen. This global demand for data in turn, drove massive increases in the performance, scale and availability
requirements. Relational databases were not designed to cope with these challenges or the agility required when developing modern applications, nor were they built to take advantage of the commodity storage and processing power available today.

In the early 2000s people had to find alternative answers and started to create new database technologies designed specifically for this new world and NoSQL as a category was born. NoSQL is not one thing but encompasses a wide variety of different database technologies that were developed for various use cases being enabled by modern applications.

This talk aims to give an overview of the history of NoSQL, the differences between NoSQL and traditional relational technologies and discuss the practical steps to take for organisations who wish to take advantage of this modern alternative to managing enterprise data.
