Event description

Description

Richard Johnson is a Primary Specialist STEM teacher at Rostrata Primary School in Western Australia and has become a change-maker in the WA education system. Fourteen years ago, he and his principal Tom Campbell recognised the critical importance of delivering high level science learning for all students. A purpose-built science lab was the first of many innovations they brought into the school and one which turned into a quiet movement involving more than one hundred schools. The lab evolved and became STEM centered five years ago. Recently the new WA Government realised the significance and value this new way of delivering STEM learning and are set to become the first government in the world to fully fund and equip two hundred more labs in WA schools. His lab now acts as a catalyst to bring relevant STEM learning into his school.

Richard’s school and the work he’s done, has been recognized through many awards. He has been the recipient of the Department of Education Award for Excellence and Innovation (2008) and the Premier’s Science Teaching Award (2008). In 2013 Richard was awarded the Prime Ministers Award for science teaching and in 2015 he was runner up in the US DiscoverE.org, Educator Awards for an outstanding contribution to STEM Education. In 2016 Richard was one of the top ten finalists in the Global Teacher Prize in Dubai.

For six years Richard has been involved in the DoE program. The Teacher Development Schools (TDS) initiative recognizes that teacher quality is the single biggest in-school influence on student achievement, and that teachers learn best from other teachers. Richard shares his expertise and classroom innovation across schools, networks and professional learning communities. Teachers and schools can access a range of practical support from his niche primary website packed with the latest ideas for STEM Learning.

AITSL Aligned certification for all attendees.
