Rotary Club of Hamilton invite you join us for our guest speaker Symantha Liu talking about “Noodles and Vegemite – my life with Brisbane’s ‘Grandfather of Chinatown’"

Symantha Liu is the granddaughter of Eddie Liu (1922-2013) – The Father of China Town in Brisbane.

Dr James Edward (Eddie) Liu is known as the founding father of Fortitude Valley’s Chinatown, and also helped to restore Brisbane’s first Chinese Temple, ‘Joss House’ at Breakfast Creek.

Dr Liu was an active fundraiser for many causes, including wartime refugees, the Australian Red Cross, Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital and Guide Dogs.

Born in Hong Kong in 1922, Dr Liu arrived in Australia in 1937 when he was 14. Later, he met Elizabeth Brown and they married in 1940.

Eddie Liu received many awards for his contribution to the local communities and businesses.

- Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1980
- Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2001
- Centenary Medal (2001)
- Metropolitan Local Hero for Queensland in 2004 Australian of the Year Awards
- University of Queensland honorary doctorate (2007)
- Honoured as a Queensland Great in 2010

Symantha is the Advancement Director of International House (IH), UQ. International House is a project initialised by Rotarian Bert Martin in 1954 for the 50th Anniversary of Rotary International and welcomed first 59 male students in 1964. Till today, IH has housed thousands of students from more than 40 nations. IH still keeps close relationship with Rotary clubs.
