Abstract:

Since the origins of aviation, flight test engineers have used specially prepared aircraft to sense and record real time data that is necessary to analyse the flight systems under test. A great deal of time and expense is required to fit the test aircraft with sensors, transducers and wiring looms that are necessary for the specific test. Consequently there is strong motivation to use wireless technology to avoid the cost and preparation time associated with hard-wired systems.

For the ADF, one of the major advantages of wireless technology is the capability to use fleet aircraft for flight test, rather than maintain a dedicated flight test fleet.

This lecture will describe the development of a non-intrusive wireless system for collecting flight data firing test flights. Non-Intrusive Flight Test Instrumentation (NIFTI) was developed as a collaboration between the RAAF Air Warfare Centre (AWC) the Defence Science and Technology Group and industry partner Defence Innovations. The first generation of this wireless NIFTI sensor system was successfully demonstrated at RAAF Edinburgh in 2015 on a PC- 9/A aircraft.

Mr Warren Canning is the Chairman of Defence Innovations and the NIFTI System Development Program Lead. Mr Canning has had a lifelong passion for aviation and an extensive career in defence, aerospace and aviation, including management positions in SMEs, large multinationals and Government.
