Description

The Canberra Branch of Young Australians in International Affairs invites you to our upcoming event Night with the Ambassadors, where we have taken advantage of the diplomatic resources at hand and put together a panel of Ambassadors and High Commissioners. Engaging in conversation about the experiences and challenges of working within the diplomatic corps, our panel have been chosen for their diplomatic careers in the Indo-Pacific region and particularly in partnership with Australia.

Please note that this event will be held under Chatham House Rule.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia Chris Seed

Chris seed commenced duties as the New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia in November 2013. Prior to taking up this position he was a Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and previously worked in the Ministry of Defence. His earlier career included assignments in Tehran, Canberra, London, and Papua New Guinea, where he was High Commissioner. In addition to a number of roles in Wellington, he also served with the International Peace Monitoring Team in the Solomon Islands, the New Zealand delegation to the UN General Assembly and was seconded to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Timor-Leste Ambassador to Australia Abel Guterres

Abel Guterres is the Ambassador of Timor Leste to Australia. Ambassador Guterres previously held the role of Consul General for Timor-Leste in Sydney from 2002 to 2008. As Consul General, he played a leading role with laying the foundations for the many friendship cities especially in Victoria and New South Wales. During the struggle for the independence of Timor Leste, he was in Australia first as a refugee in 1975 and later as an Australian resident and citizen.

Representative from the High Commission of the Kingdom of Tonga

Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Tuku’aho became the High Commissioner of Tonga to Australia in August 2012 and has recently also been named High Commissioner of Tonga to Papua New Guinea. The High Commissioner is a member of the Royal family of Tonga and of House Tupou.

This event will be followed by a chance to network among attendees and guests.
