Learning the secrets of night photography with this enlightening and fun 3 hour workshop in Cairns. With guidance from a professional photographer, you'll discover how the night opens up creative possibilities for photographing cityscapes, light trails, portraits and abstracts, as well as for painting with light.
The course is ideal for beginners or enthusiasts who are interested in learning more about the capabilities of their cameras and increasing their confidence shooting in manual exposure mode. It's a fun & illuminating night's photography allowing you to explore the possibilities of shooting at night and to experiment with new techniques.
Numbers are limited to a max of 6 students.
Students should have a digital SLR, hybrid camera or compact camera with at least programme (P) mode and preferably a tripod (though we can hire you one if required). A basic understanding of photography (ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed) would also be advantageous. An external flash (such as a Speedlite) would be good, but not essential.
Some of the topics covered during the workshop:
- Camera set up and settings for night photography
- Using manual exposure at night
- Long exposure and using the Bulb setting
- Shooting traffic trails, neon signs and cityscapes
- Using movement and motion blur
- Image composition
- Using flash and small lights for portraits
- Introduction to light painting
- Creative tips for night shooting
What to Bring:
- Camera, lenses and your camera manual
- Camera bag or backpack
- Memory cards and fully charged batteries
- Sturdy tripod (if you don't have one, we hire tripods at $10 for the night)
- External flash (if you have one)
- Small torch (for use in exercises)
- Comfortable shoes, as we'll be walking around the city
Cairns Photo Courses is led by professional photographer Andrew Watson whose work has been published in magazines, advertising, corporate and promotional material around the world, including National Geographic, The Sunday Times, The Australian, Lonely Planet and many more. Andrew grew up in North Queensland and is passionate about teaching and about sharing the region's amazing landscapes, people and lifestyle through photography.
What kind of camera do I need for this workshop?
Ideally this course is suited to users of digital SLRs with interchangeable lenses, however bridge cameras, hybrid cameras and compact cameras with at least programme (P) mode are also suitable (please contact us if you're unsure). We cover all brands of camera, from Canon and Nikon to Sony, Minolta and others.
Is there an age limit for students?
For this workshop, there is a minimum age of 18 years.
Where do we meet and what is parking like?
We will be meeting outside the Salt House Restaurant & Bar at Marina Point (next to The Pier shopping centre) from where the workshop will commence. We'll finish in the city centre. There is paid parking in the carpack of The Pier or free parking around the city centre after 5pm.
What is the refund policy?
A full refund is available if you cancel your booking more than 14 days prior to the start date. A 50% refund is provided when cancelled less than 14 days prior to the start date. No refunds will be provided for cancellations after the course has commenced. If, once the course has commenced, you are unable to attend due to illness or any other reason, we are unable to provide a refund or offer a transfer to another course.
Am I able to transfer my course to another date?
If you're unable to attend the course originally booked and wish to be transferred to a future course, you may do so, however the same policy applies with regards to cancellations for any future course.
What is the class size?
For this course, the maximum number of students is 6. We also reserve the right to cancel a course if the minimum required number of places has not been filled. In the event that we have to cancel a course, a full refund or transfer to a future course will be offered.
