Event description

Description

We spend most of our lives being told to write in the active voice. But what does that really mean? The nuts-and-bolts grammatical definition involves putting the ‘actor’ in the grammatical subject. When people use the expression active writing, though, they tend to mean other things too.

In this 90-minute workshop, punctuated with fun exercises and video clips, we will cover:

  • The grammar of the active voice (subjects and actors in clauses)

  • The effect of the adverb (destroying adverbs can make a clause’s meaning pointier and banish apology from your emails)

  • Marking prepositions for destruction (writing sentences that travel in a straight line rather than in loops)

  • Rescuing finite verbs from zombie nouns (putting the action where it should be)

  • The paramedic method (combining the above tactics in a Voltron-like attack formation for puffy sentences)

  • Eye contact and spoken-ness as editing tools (‘Good writing doesn’t disappear up its own asshole.’ – Kurt Vonnegut)
