The health and wellbeing of NSW Coal Mine workers has been under the spotlight due to the identification of “Black Lung”. This presentation will examine current features of dust disease and techniques for identification as well as reviewing other important health issues affecting NSW Coal Mine workers.

SESSION CONTENT:

• Identify pneumoconiosis of interest to coal mining

• Understand the pathogenesis of Coal Mine Dust Lung Disease (CMDLD) including symptoms and clinical findings

• Discuss the concept of ‘risk of harm formula’ in medical standards

• Explore the impact of medical conditions on ability to perform coal mining tasks safely

• Recognise the elevated cardiovascular and obesity occupational risk factors in Coal Mine Workers

• Screen Coal Mine workers for prevalent health conditions
