Augmented and Virtual Reality

New Futures Hackathon for AR/VR 2019 will bring together multidisciplinary minds to explore the application of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies for building engaging experiences. Meet new people, be exposed to fresh ideas, learn new skills and build creative, original work.

WHY AR/VR?

AR and VR are on the precipice of rapid expansion as global revenues for the AR/VR market are projected to increase by at least 100% over the next four years.

As hardware developers make AR and VR headsets more affordable and user-friendly, startups are developing new use cases far beyond gaming – applying AR and VR to everything from marketing and advertising to medicine and healthcare to even space exploration and military training.

Further, the potential for this technology to help us understand and transform ourselves and the world around us is limitless. VR & AR can connect us and through education via immersive experiences creates awareness, and can lead the world to act on global issues.

FRIDAY 3 MAY:

Meet at New Space in Room X502

5:30pm - Registration: Check in, grab some food and meet some of the other hackathon participants.

6:15pm - AR/VR Panel: Learn from local AR/VR experts as they talk about the challenges within the sector.

6:30pm - Event Info: We’ll go over the event schedule, logistics, datasets and rules. Mentors and domain experts will be introduced.

7pm - Dinner

8pm - Team pitches and formation: Registered without a team? First time to a hackathon? Never fear! This is the opportunity for people with ideas to pitch (2mins) to secure teammates that fill skill gaps.

9pm - Ideation workshop: If your team is sorted but you haven’t settled on an idea to develop, this workshop will help your figure out a focus.

10pm - WTF is DevPost and Slack Workshop

11pm - Registration closes: Hackathon teams must register their team name and individual team members via DevPost.

SATURDAY 3 MAY

7am Hack commences: Doors open, and the hack commences.

8am Breakfast

9pm Venue closes: coding and development paused


SUNDAY 5 MAY

7am Venue reopens: coding and development recommences

4pm Hack closes: All final projects must be submitted to the Hackathon GitHub page. No updates can be made past this time. Then it’s time to prepare your pitch.

5pm Pitches: Teams have 5 minutes to pitch their solution to the judging panel.

6pm Dinner: Time to relax and enjoy a feed after a long day of hacking.

7pm Winners announced: Prizes for the top three teams are announced.

8pm Event close: Get some well-deserved rest knowing you’ve expanded your network and skillset.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

Innovation: full improvement to full breakthrough.

Solution fit: Is there a real problem? Is your solution really going to solve it?

Feasibility How likely is the project to work and be accepted by the market/community?

Prototype: What progress has the team achieved during the hack and how functional is the project?

Pitch: In the end, everything comes down to how well you can see your ideas.
