Description

Due to risk of rain on the 7th, we've rescheduled to the 28th February. We're sorry for any inconvenience to anyone. The new start time is 6pm Friday the 28th of February.

-- Gameplay Information --

Gentrification is transforming our cities, leading to increased state surveillance and control of public spaces, pushing out the most vulnerable members of our community. Coercive governments are cracking down on peaceful protest to discourage people from participating in rallies and demonstrations.

The struggle between ordinary people and corporate interests is intensifying. The power of the Surveillance State is increasing.

Join us on the evening of Friday, 7 February for a free outdoor mega-game in Kurilpa Point Park where players explore public space through play, interacting with one another through their secret allegiance to either ‘Order’ or ‘Resistance.’

Surveillance State is a gamified space activation event. Through immersion in a futuristic story of resistance against tyranny and control, players learn more about present-day surveillance and hostile architecture, hearing stories of ongoing state oppression and criminalisation of marginalised people in public spaces.

Prior registration is essential, as attendance is limited to 100 players.

Participants should arrive by 5:45pm at the latest. The game runs from 6pm to 8pm. Detailed game rules and safety guidelines will be provided to players via email after they register, and via pre-game briefings on the day.

This game is intended for participants aged 16 and over.

Accessibility: Like any public park, accessibility varies throughout the game area. Most game elements will be wheelchair accessible via concrete footpaths, and impaired mobility is not a barrier to participation. Please advise us in advance if an Auslan interpreter will make it easier for you to participate.

Please note: There are no public toilets on site. The nearest open toilets are at the State Library of Queensland.

Parking in the vicinity is limited, so we strongly recommend travelling via active or public transport.

Call Jonno Sri’s office on 3403 2165 or email halfhuman@halfmonstergames.com if you have any questions.

-- Further Information --

This event is taking place on the unceded Sovereign lands of the Jagera and Turrbal Peoples. Kurilpa Point Park has been an important gathering area for Aboriginal people for thousands of generations, and remains a space where First Nations people gather and seek shelter.

Kurilpa Point is a contested and heavily policed space. Homeless and marginalised people who use this area continue to experience harassment and violence from the police force and some members of the wider public.

State violence is not a game, nor is it just a hypothetical possibility in some distant dystopian future. It’s happening right now, with deadly consequences, particularly for First Nations Peoples, People of Colour and other persecuted communities.

As gentrification accelerates, with big money flooding into the inner-city and higher numbers of comparatively privileged people moving through Kurilpa Point Park, government surveillance of this space is increasing, with more CCTV cameras and a growing police presence extending its reach across the river from the CBD.

The main goals of holding a game in this space are to:

  • Draw wider public attention to expanding state surveillance and hostile architecture, encouraging participants to view the urban landscape differently and understand how urban design decisions impact the way public spaces are used

  • Share stories that highlight the contested nature of this space, the increasing marginalisation of vulnerable people around Kurilpa Point, and the ongoing impacts of colonisation

  • Bring people together and reassert the right to use public spaces for celebration and play, free from paywalls, commercialisation and state bureaucracy

This game is not about glamourising or romanticising the daily struggles of vulnerable people, “giving people a taste of what it’s like” or trivialising protest and political resistance.

It’s about critically examining the role of police in our society, and using storytelling and play to celebrate subversiveness and civil disobedience and to challenge dominant narratives of safety and order.

By organising an event like this in a public park, we are reasserting the right (and responsibility) to use public space for subversive counter-cultural gatherings and activities. We are coming together in the physical world to share ideas and build personal relationships with one another, so we can imagine a world where the state has less authoritarian control and interference over our lives.

-- Safety and Conduct Information --

All Half-Monster Games follow three non-negotiable rules for the safety of players, staff, and the public. We understand that during a live-action roleplaying game, people like to embody characters and that sometimes these characters will have aggressive personalities. However, there are certain behaviours which are unsafe and potentially triggering, and repeatedly ignoring warnings regarding this behaviour will result in expulsion of the game. Removal from the game will be at the discretion of Half-Monster staff and volunteers.

1) No Touching - this is a non-contact without consent event. All actions can and should be mimed, unless explicit consent is sought and given enthusiastically each and every time. No violence, pushing, restraining, or any other kind of aggressive behaviour will be allowed under any circumstances, even in the context of roleplay.

2) No Swearing, Threats, or R-Rated Themes - this is a public event and as such, abiding by a mature but mindful language and discourse. Even in a roleplay context, racism, sexism, ableism, violent threats, or discussion of rape/sexual assault, and similar offensive content, or are not appropriate in this setting. If you see someone becoming uncomfortable - or are uncomfortable yourself - speak up, and at any time feel free to talk to a Facilitator or Half-Monster staffmember for assistance. This is not to censor anyone or prevent legitimate discussion or discourse on important matters, but to ensure that everyone has clear expectations and trigger-warnings before these themes are discussed in the game setting.

3) No Running or Climbing - the game will be designed to be played at a walking pace, and due to the various natural features and built infrastructure at the event location, running or climbing is not safe and will not be allowed.
