Being a lawyer in 2021 is definitely NOT what it used to be ...

Why?

One word: Status.

The status of the legal profession has CHANGED in the modern world, especially in this post-pandemic world.

Law is no longer that prized, above-everyone-else noble institution that upholds justice and the rule of law. It's no longer ABOVE other industries. And because of this, today lawyers have to put up with the BS antics of having to prove their worth, compete on price and prove why their services are "not JUST a business, like any other".

Like it or not, the reality is that this new world "law for sale" culture reinforces the malleability of legal practice to the dictates of commercial pressures.

And because of that, the status of lawyers has slipped.

As if those historical shifts were not enough ... lawyers are simply armed with the full repertoire of skills and tools to maintain their status as legitimate authority figures in negotiations, especially outside of their familiar playing field of legal correspondence and courtrooms, where politics and complex human dynamics rule.

As lawyers, we don't get to formally study the richer human motivations, politics and dynamics beyond the law that can wield incredible power to bend, twist and turn negotiations. And that lack of training can sadly alienate clients, unfairly inhibit lawyers from performing at their best and cause them to lose their position of well-deserved authority in negotiations.
