NDS Leadership Innovation Network

Workshop 6: Ethical Leadership and Decision Making

The NDS Leadership Innovation Network was established to support executives providing services for people with disability to manage organisations through complex change.

This is the last workshop in the series. Join Rhys Edwards in a discussion on ethical leadership and decision making.

When 5:30 pm, Tuesday 15th May 2018

Where RACV/RACT Apartment Hotel, 156 Collins Street, Hobart

About the evening: Ethical leadership and decision making

We all know we have a responsibility to act ethically and with integrity in our roles, but is it just about following codified rules of conduct and subscribing to a set of organisational values?

Do we need to be doing the right things, as well as doing things the right way?

And what does “right” mean anyway?

Rhys Edwards will facilitate this session exploring the importance of ethical leadership and the intersection between our “leadership roles” and our personal values.

Rhys will explore the ethical dimension of decision making and the tensions that exist in a utilitarian and consequentialist “market model” attempting to provide the means for a dignified and participatory life.

Join Rhys for a deep dive in to the issues about the moral purpose of public work. This interactive session will pose some fundamental questions about the work that we do.

  • Is it true that sometimes in order to do good we have to engage in evil?

  • Do the ends justify the means?

  • What will future generations condemn us for?

  • Is there a tension between the obligations of your organisational role and your own ethical standards?

  • How do we balance truth vs loyalty, individual vs community needs, and short term versus long term
