NDS is partnering with TasTAFE to deliver this skill set entitled ‘Introduction to Allied Health’.

This training provides a sound introduction to the skills required to work in partnership with allied health professionals such as Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.

This training has been designed with input from disability sector allied health professionals with the aim of extending the role of disability support workers in delivering much needed allied health therapy supports to people with disability.


Accredited - Units of Competency

In this skill set, students will complete the following units of competency:

• HLTAH001 Assist with an allied health program
• BSBMED301 Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
• HLTAAP002 Confirm physical health status.

On completion, interested students and employers will be supported to pursue further enrolment options to complete their full Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance.


Students will be expected to undertake the following:

  • Attend 4 days of face-to-face workshops; 3 day block at outset and 1 day reflection at end.
  • Complete 80 hours of workplace learning and assessment with some support from an allied health professional.
  • Participate in facilitated online assessment and reflection tasks.

Schedule of training:

3 day intensive workshop:

Tuesday 8th, Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th May, 2018

Followed by 6 months workplace learning + final workshop.

Final workshop to be negotiated with trainer and learners.


This skill set is aimed at disability support workers and people who are currently working with people with disabilities.

Applicants should keep in mind that a core requirement of the training is an ability to undertake workplace learning and assessment tasks with the support of an allied health professional.
