Event description

Description

The Faculty of Arts Early Career Academic Committee (ECAC) cordially invites you to:

Navigating Career Development Opportunities: a discussion panel, Q&A and networking event for Early Career Academics

Academic career progression seems to hinge on generating a greater number of outcomes than there is time to achieve them. While it is clear that academic staff must set priorities, it’s often less obvious how to go about this. In this event, senior academics (A/Prof Chris Healy, A/Prof Belinda Hewitt and A/Prof Birgit Lang) will draw on their experiences in the Faculty of Arts to offer their take on how ECAs might best channel their energies into progress review and promotion, with a view to enabling you to develop a long-term view of your career goals and, accordingly, to prioritise competing demands in the immediate term. The panel will cover which factors to consider when prioritising projects and outcomes; how to ensure research, teaching and engagement outcomes are impactful; how to make service (committee work, etc.) count career-wise; how to negotiate power imbalances that often inform ECAs’ relationships with senior colleagues; and tips for navigating Annual Progress Reviews and promotion applications.

The panel and Q&A is followed by a networking lunch, where we will continue the discussion, offering an opportunity for ECAs to develop new ideas and formulate goals for the year ahead.

Attendees are also invited to submit questions for panellists ahead of time, we encourage you to do this in particular if you have no Faculty mentor with whom you could otherwise discuss this issue. Questions can be of a general nature or specifically address your situation. This will help panellists to ensure their advice speaks to you. Of course these questions may be posed anonymously. Please e-mail your questions to Ken Setiawan (setiawan.k@unimelb.edu.au) by Monday 23 April.
