Event description

Description

For early naturalists, creating a natural history diary was an essential process in the study of flora and fauna. Diaries would often contain biological descriptions and observations, accompanied by detailed (and often stunning) sketches. Many of these historical diaries are now considered to be works of art as well as scientific documents. Today, observing and drawing nature still remains a valuable exercise for students and enthusiasts of biology.

In this brand new series of workshops, professional artist Peter Wale will teach us the art (and science) of nature journaling in the beautiful surrounds of Sydney’s bushland. For our first session (of four), we will explore the natural history of Centennial Park’s wonderful ponds: think waterbirds, freshwater invertebrates, turtles, water plants and fish!

We welcome scientists, naturalists and artists of all skill levels. Get out your binoculars, ID guides, pens and pencils! An interest in natural history is definitely more important that artistic ability here.

Materials required:

  • A hard-backed sketchpad (preferably no larger than A4)
  • Pencils and/or coloured pencils
  • Small camera or phone (with camera)
  • If you’d like to bring water colour (optional), please bring water colour paper sketchpad, palette, and water.
  • Micron pens (optional)
  • Field guides (optional)

Don’t forget to bring clothing appropriate for the weather (e.g. hat, raincoat) and sunscreen as we’ll be outside for most of the workshop.

Please feel free to email Peter peterwale@optusnet.com.au if you have any questions.
